My work for Asylum is a response to the idea of "difference" and conformity through integration. Metaphorical in nature and transformative from left to right, the image transmutes from a clearly defined identity to one merged into and conforming to the background.
It evolved from visiting Doctor Guislain Museum, Ghent, Belgium. This is a working psychiatric hospital with attached museum. Visitors to the museum are given sticky coloured labels to distinguish them from patients, relatives and staff. This labelling provided a metaphor for wider society where "labels" are attached to "outsiders".
